Salzburg Marionette Theatre, Stage Director: Hinrich Horstkotte
“Hansel and Gretel” is a fairy tale opera, which Engelbert Humperdinck brilliantly composed in 1892. Its charming melodies are enjoyed by children and adults alike. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre created a fascinating production of Hansel and Gretel performed by renowned singers and highly skilled puppeteers.
The idea tot he Opera „Hansel and Gretl“ came form the composers sister, who askes him to compose some music for poems she had written for her children. The next year the opera was performed for the first time, two days before Christmas in Weimar. The opera was an instant hit. Within the next year, it had already been performed at over fifty opera houses around Europe. Today it is still very popular, and is often performed in the weeks before Christmas.
Humperdinck wrote a letter to his brother-in-law describing the overture to his opera. “Last Sunday I also wrote the overture, which turned into quite a long piece of music, a sort of musical prologue, which could be called “Children’s Life” … It gets pretty loud, but sunt pueri pueri, pueri puerilia tractant (children will be children, which is why they do childish things), so for the voice of a tough little boy only the trumpet would do.”
Hansel and Gretel are strong little children: the trumpet reminds us of that. And while the folk song melodies in “Hansel and Gretel” make it an opera that children enjoy, its music is for everyone. Humperdinck wrote five more operas, but today “Hansel and Gretel” is the one for which he is best remembered.
